Book clubs are great places not only read and discuss new books but also to meet new people. ESL students who do join a book clubnot want to join a book club where members are native speakers could from a book club themselves.  However, many existing book clubs would probably welcome and wish to be supportive of an English language learner who wanted to join their group.

It’s Free! – Yes that’s right, you can easily form a book club and hold meetings in your local library each month. You don’t have to spend money which is perfect for those who don’t have a lot to spend.  Many book club members who have a book will loan it out to other members who do not have it.

Meet New People – A book club allows you to meet new people who have similar interests as you do. You never know you may even meet your future partner or best friend.

Read A Great Book – Each month you will have fun reading a brand new book that you would otherwise not have known about. You are introduced to new authors and discussions about the books give insight into new ideas, themes, and ways of thinking.

Lively Discussions – Book clubs facilitate lively discussions about the book you have just read and give you a chance to put forward your opinion.

Read Outside The Box – You also have a chance to explore new genres of books. You may be given a romance novel when you like thrillers or vice versa, and who knows be excited to discover that you actually like this new genre.

Turn The TV Off – Another great thing about forming a book club is that you turn your TV off. The world is saturated with technology these days and what better way to unplug than by reading a great book.
